Job Hunting Strategies Part 1

Graduating from college is a very exciting time, but it can also be a scary time, because many graduates feel unprepared to enter the workforce. Fortunately, there are just three job hunting strategies that are necessary for landing the perfect job. College grads just need to put together three things: a resume, a cover letter, and a portfolio.

Put Together a Resume
The first step to getting hired is having a great resume. Many college students have never written a resume, because they have only worked jobs that require applications. However, writing a good resume does not have to be difficutlt. Many templates and example resumes can be found online that demonstrate how to set up a sharp looking resume and what information to include. Most universities also offer assistance in preparing resumes to help their students be as successful as possible in their job searches. While it is important to follow traditional resumes in format, you should try to make your resume stand out in content. Include information that is relevant to the job you are trying to get, but also include information and job experience that will show potential employers that you are a dedicated, responsible, and hard working employee.

Write a Cover Letter
Having a good cover letter is just as important as having a good resume, because recruiters often look at them together. In fact, many recruiters skim through resumes, but they are more likely to take the time to read your entire cover letter. A well written cover letter is a great way for a potential employer to get to know a little more about you, but a poorly written cover letter will likely get your resume thrown in the trash. Personalize each cover letter to the specific company and position that you are applying for to make sure that you make the best impression possible. Also, make sure to carefully check over your cover letter for mistakes and have someone else proofread it as well.

Put Together a Portfolio
While some positions do not necessitate a portfolio, it can be a great way to showcase your work. Other positions require that a portfolio be submitted, because the recruiter is especially interested in seeing what you can do. Your portfolio should represent your best work in as many different areas, formats, and styles as possible. Proofread each document carefully for any flaws so that your work will stand out to the recruiter.

After following these job hunting strategies and putting together a resume, cover letter, and portfolio, you will be well on your way to impressing potential employers and landing the perfect job. Then comes the next step to further your job hunt i.e, networking and get an internship. Read more about it here.
