According to Manpower Inc, a world leader in workforce solutions, there is expected to be global skill trade shortage in near future; they also suggest that businesses, governments and trade associations need to work together to identify long-term strategic solutions to mitigate the problem of a shortage of skilled trade workers or future economic growth will suffer.
The lack of skilled blue collar workers like electricians, mechanics, cabinet makers and welders could ihamper the progress of infrastructure projects and halt the national growth – such as transportation and power, for example. It is a problem of deeper concern that must be addressed to foster economic health and fuel business growth.
Manpower found that skilled trades were the top area of shortage in 10 of 17 European countries and ranked in the Top two challenges in six of the 10 biggest economics, according to recent survey of 35,000 employers. Following is the list of blue collar jobs which are in demand now and will continue to be in demand for several years:
• Plumbers: With more and more people moving to “go green” with solar heating and bio-fuel, these plumbers are in great demand. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), www.bls.gov, this occupation should experience job growth at the rate of 10% between 2006 and 2016. It is also one amongst the highest paying jobs where annual salary of a plumber ranges from $46,000 - $75,000 and up, thus making it a very lucrative career option.
• Carpenter: In spite of the recession hit on the infrastructure, this is one of the demanding and growing occupation as people are moving more toward bio-friendly and energy efficient buildings. BLS also reports a job growth rate of 13% between 2006 and 2016. So if you are strong, innovative and love building and working with your hands, then here is a great profession for you.
• Electrician: Go Green Agenda and move to green energy sources make this occupation a smart move. Along with an expected employment growth rate of 12% and state and municipal licensing a person can earn an annual salary ranging from $ 40,000 to $ 60,000 according to BLS.
• Automobile Mechanic: This is an ever evolving green profession, no matter the economy is good, bad or worse because people want keep their cars in perfect condition and the chase for owning a new car never dies. A vocational training program or an associate degree can make you competitive in this field.
• Elevator installer/ repairer: According to BLS, this is the best paid blue collar jobs with a median salary of $49,039. It is also exceptionally recession proof as most of the work entails maintenance or repairs.
