Jones International University grew from an early television-based distance learning program started in 1987. In 1993, it started offering online courses and became the first completely online university. Six years later, amidst much controversy, Jones International University became the first regionally accredited online university. Since then, it has developed several new degree programs and specialization, and now offers degrees at all post-secondary education levels.

Jones International University offers online degrees in two schools: education and business. In the School of Education, they offer Certificates in Education, a Master of Education, Education Specialist, and a Doctor of Education. In the School of Business, they offer several categories of degrees: Business Administration Certificate accelerated, Bachelors to Masters Business specializations, Bachelor of Arts in Business Communication, Bachelor of Business Administration, Master of Arts in Business Communication, Master of Business Administration, and Doctorate in Business Administration.
Accreditation
Jones International University is the first completely online American university to be granted accreditation by the Higher Learning Commission and by a member of the North Central Association. This decision was controversial because, at that time, Jones International University only taught one subject. Since then, they have developed 47 different specializations, all of which are accredited online degrees.
