- Go back to school. Online education has become increasingly popular, and today you can study just about any field you desire. Education is no exception. Teachers must have at least a bachelor’s degree in their grade-specific educational field. A master’s degree is a huge plus, giving you greater credibility and the possibility of a higher salary.
- Consider specializing. Some of the most in-demand teachers are those with experience in programs like ESL and Special Needs. If you have a heart for working with people who struggle educationally, consider specializing.
- Get certified. Teachers must be certified in their state. If you study at an out-of-state University there may be a few hoops to jump through in order to attain in-state certification. Check it out and get certified.
- Look for a job. Big city schools are struggling these days, and they tend to be looking for change. So if you don’t mind the city life, consider moving closer to it. Rural schools are less likely to be hiring. Keep in mind as you look that you must be certified in the state where you teach.
- Become a “People Person.” As you interview for a teaching job, evaluate your skill set. Most Principals are looking for highly enthusiastic, flexible individuals with a passion for teaching and young people.
- Get Experience. Having trouble getting hired? Look for ways to boost your resume. If you’re interviewing for an elementary teaching job, you need lots of experience working with kids. Day care, tutoring, summer camp, you name it – just about anything counts. Even if you aren’t making any money, the experience will hopefully give you the credibility you need to get hired.
Teaching is not the easiest field, but it’s certainly one of the most rewarding. And these days a quality teacher can make decent money.
